Dust-jacket just a little worn and repaired. When the United States purchased the Louisiana Territory from France in 1803, Thomas Jefferson commissioned his young secretary, Meriweather Lewis and William Clark, both officers in the Army, to explore the new domain by making their way to the source of the Missouri and hopefully to find a water passage to the Pacific. They were to botanize, collect animal specimens and find out all they could of the Indian tribes along the route, attempting to make peace with them. The journals kept by these two extraordinarily successful pathfinders are one of the basic documents of American history. Index.
