She fell in love with him and obviously was convinced that he reciprocated those feelings. Indeed, friends around her saw them together and assumed they were closely attached. However, Burroughs had married in 1863 and it was said that Mary became deranged when she eventually discovered this fact. In January 1865, she went to the Treasury House in Washington and shot Burroughs. Was there sufficient provocation to condone the murder?
